He has compiled a career record of 759-172-2, with an 84.4 winning percentage. Groves has been coaching track and field for over 48 years, 33 of which have been at Penn State. He also served as a member of the site selection committee for the 19 U.S. Additionally, he was the head coach for the 1986 Goodwill Games team in Moscow, Russia and the head coach for the 1989 World Cup team in Barcelona, Spain. In 1992, he had the honor of being an assistant coach of the U.S. World Championship team and also served as an assistant to the 1993 team.
